Popular movie star Timothée Chalamet embodies Bob Dylan as the lead in A Complete Unknown, and has earned an Oscar nomination for his impeccable performance.
The film follows Dylan’s musical journey, quickly rising to fame. Love interest Sylvie Russo (Elle Fanning) highlights the struggle of dating a musician, especially with Joan Baez (Monica Barbaro) as the competition.
Dylan struggles to balance the two things he loves most. His girlfriend fights to maintain her place in his life, while Dylan entertains a musical distraction from things that matter. This storyline highlights how his love for music overrides anything or anyone else because it was the only thing he ever wanted to make time for.
Many are familiar with the voice that overtook folk music, but what about Chalamet’s? Due to copyright issues, the actor performed all of the songs featured in the film. This brought a sense of Chalamet’s individuality into the picture, proving that the multi-talented actor was a perfect fit for this role.
The wardrobe was not only fun and stylish, but it felt like I was immersed in the ’60s, the way the film perfectly captured the atmosphere of its time. One piece I have ingrained in my mind is a coat worn by Russo. The cuffs were lined with fur, and dark brown suede took over the rest, topped off with a playful, almost checkered-like pattern lining the opening of the jacket, paired with some high-cut boots. These past looks continue to inspire modern trends today. This movie draws attention to the iconic ‘60s and ‘70s fashion, capturing the resurgence of the style in today’s day and age.
Before watching this film, I had little to no knowledge or interest in Dylan, but I can confidently say it’s a must-watch. Dylan’s character evolution is enthralling. Although he experienced many life changes, he never grew out of his surly attitude, making him Bob Dylan.
If you enjoyed any of Chalamet’s previous movies like Dune, this film offers a change of pace from his most recent works while showcasing his diversity.
