The devil is back. Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly and Anne Hathaway as Andy Sachs have been spotted again in The Devil Wears Prada 2.
This sequel has been highly anticipated by fans of the original movie. The first film is based on a book from Lauren Weisbeger, which tells us her own story and experience as an assistant of Vogue’s famous former editor in chief, Anna Wintour. The book and the movie are about Andy, who gets a job as an assistant of Miranda Priestly. She soon realizes the job is taking over her whole own personal life as she tries to impress Miranda and her impossible demands.
In the sequel, Andy is a successful journalist and meets Miranda again, who comes back to write and edit for Runway magazine. Miranda struggles, and we get to see where Emily, her former coworker, and Nigel, the main assistant of Miranda, all ended up. All the characters meet again and grow together as a team.
The locations and sets are once again incredible. The movie takes place in New York and features fashion shows in Milan, where we get a good look into the fashion industry through designer outfits and fashion references.
We see Miranda struggling with the new generation due to the changes in the fashion industry and the working world itself. The movie has some good laughs, as we love the fashion satire. For example, her new assistant constantly tells her how to act so she does not get cancelled.
However, the writing is bad and the story barely captivates the audience, with some sudden events making the writing look cheap. I saw the ending coming. Nothing in the movie shocked me in a good or surprising way. Some scenes were unnecessary and slowed down the pace.
The movie has a lot of product placement advertisements where the camera was completely focusing on objects. These interrupted the movie and distracted from the story. At one point it just felt like a long advertisement. Like the whole movie was just Disney’s hope to get them out of their financial situation and last flops.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 is for everybody who still wants to know how the story continues and how the characters have developed. People who like fashion and comedy should go to the cinema to see it. The movie might not have been implemented well, but the movie is still a big part of pop culture.
