High school is more than simply a series of lessons and tests; it is a life-changing journey of events that mold your identity. From joyful successes to difficult lessons, these moments combine to form your “high school experience.”
To make this time memorable, teachers from Skyline High School share their insights and advice from their high school experiences. Teachers Grahm Hannah, Megan Stark, and Shelby Eaton emphasize the importance of getting involved and forming connections.
Spanish teacher Graham Hannah recalls the open campus at Pioneer High School, where the freedom to venture to nearby shops made each day feel more exciting. “We would get pizza, hoagies, and other good stuff.” His advice? Join clubs, classes, and sports. “The more involved you get, the better off you will be.”
Megan Stark, who teaches mathematics, reflects on her high school days as a three-sport varsity athlete: “I would be doing one sport or another.” She played volleyball, basketball, and soccer. In volleyball, she faced off against Alisha Glass, who is now a professional volleyball player. “She destroyed us,” Stark laughs. Stark highlights the importance of surrounding yourself with the right people.
Shelby Eaton’s love for literature won her recognition as the highest-honored student. In school, she won the English Department award, a cherished dictionary signed by her teachers. “I still have this dictionary…I just love it so much,” says Eaton. She encourages students to embrace new challenges. “Just trying will change your life.”
Hannah, Stark, and Eaton all emphasize guidance beyond academics: experiment with new activities, establish supportive connections, and actively participate in school activities.
The experiences and advice shared by these teachers serve as a reminder that high school is a critical period offering ample chances for personal development and self-exploration. As students contemplate their paths, they should consider that the dedication they put in now will lay the foundation for their future achievements.
The high school experience is more than grades; it is about creating memories, building relationships, and discovering who you are. Embracing this journey can lead to a rewarding and impactful future.
