Many teenagers work out, especially the ones at Skyline High School––but where they choose to do it, and why, says a lot about what they’re looking for beyond just lifting weights.
From the buzzing energy of Stadium Planet Fitness, to the family-rooted culture of the Downtown Ann Arbor YMCA, to the premium equipment at LA Fitness, Skyline students are scattered across the city’s gym landscape. Each one has its own personality and its own price tag.
The YMCA: Communities First
For Alaina Feliks, Learning Center lead teacher, the choice was never really about the equipment. It was about the feeling. “I love the YMCA,” says Feliks. “The YMCA is the perfect vibe for me–– babies, young people, old people. It’s just a really community-focused place.”
Feliks has been a member for a while, and what originally drew her in was exactly that community emphasis. When she had a young child, the Y’s programming made it a natural fit. “They had so many things for kids –– little leagues and stuff like that, conveniently through the YMCA.”
The YMCA Downtown Ann Arbor tends to attract members who want more than just a workout––they want connection. The facility runs educational programs alongside its finest offerings, making it a hub for families and people of all ages. For students who value a multi-generational environment, it’s hard to beat.
That said, the YMCA isn’t without its drawbacks: the locker rooms leave something to be desired. “The locker rooms are pretty gross–– it’s definitely not the “fanciest,” she admits. Still, she gives the gym a high overall rating, pointing to its relatively low membership cost as a major plus. And when asked whether she’d recommended it to others? “Yes,” she says without hesitation.
Bottom Line: The Downtown Ann Arbor YMCA is best for students who want a social, community-based atmosphere and an affordable 40 $ to 95 $ membership fee. Ideal for all fitness levels––but don’t expect luxury amenities.
Planet Fitness (on Stadium Boulevard): Budget-Friendly and beginner-welcoming
Stadium Planet Fitness is one of the most recognizable names in budget fitness, and for a good reason. With membership fees as low as $15 a month, it’s often the first gym Skyline students sign up for––especially with Planet Fitness offering a free summer membership program for students, which is perfect for those just starting out.
The chain has built its brand around being a “judgment-free zone,” which appeals to students who might feel intimidated walking into a more hardcore gym environment. The location on Stadium Boulevard is easily accessible for students on the west side of Ann Arbor.
However, serious gym-goers sometimes find its equipment selection limiting––Planet Fitness famously does not allow deadlifts or chalk, and the free weight selection is smaller compared to other gyms. Its social media reputation tends to lean toward being beginner-friendly, rather than a destination for hardcore athletes.
Bottom Line: Best for beginners, casual exercisers or students on a tight budget. Not ideal for serious weightlifters chasing heavy PRs.
LA Fitness: The Serious Athlete’s Choice
For Skyline students who are more serious about their training–– athletes, bodybuilders, or those chasing specific fitness goals––LA Fitness is the top recommendation. The facility typically boasts a full range of free weights, multiple cardio machines, a pool, group fitness classes, and racquetball courts.
The trade-off is price. LA Fitness memberships run higher than planet fitness, putting it out of reach for some students. But for those who can afford the 35- 60 per month fee, the equipment quality and variety are hard to match locally.
On social media, LA Fitness carries a reputation as the gym for people who take their workouts seriously–– the place you go when you’re ready to level up.
Bottom Line: Best for experienced gym goers who want full equipment access and variety. Worth the higher cost for dedicated athletes.
So, Which Gym wins?

- Cheapest Option: Planet Fitness
- Best equipment for serious training
- Best social environment: YMCA
