Weapons is easily the best horror film of 2025. Although there were many good films, like The Ugly Stepsister and Bring Her Back, I still felt like Weapons was the best because of how creative it was. Despite plot holes that left me confused, Weapons was still a really enjoyable movie that scared me a lot.
As the web of secrets was unveiled, Weapons left my jaw on the floor, combining the mystery elements with genuine scares really, really well. It was directed by Zach Cregger, known for Barbarian (2022), which was acclaimed as “the most unpredictable horror film of 2022.” So it’s safe to say I entered this movie with high hopes.
Weapons follows a mourning town that’s desperately searching for a class of 17 children who went missing one night. At 2:17 am, every child from Ms. Gandy’s class got out of bed, walked into the dark, and never came back. As the parents and the whole town desperately try to figure out what happened, a more sinister secret is there right in front of their faces, all along.
Weapons is a unique, layered, fun movie that is worth watching. It is unpredictable and has an amazing story to see unfold.
Not only is the writing good, combining realistic portrayals of grief with characters saying genuinely terrifying things at times, but many moments just had me laughing out loud because of how funny they were. The antagonist is scary, but hilarious, and the characters do irrational and crazy things that make the movie fun.
The cinematography stands out and adds to the scare factor greatly. The camera is always panning and following characters around, with very minimal cuts. This makes it feel like the story is unfolding in real time, taking viewers along with the mysterious ride.
Weapons isn’t a straightforward movie. When I finished the film, I was left with so many questions that I had to Google answers to. In one scene, a random gun appears in the sky, a subtle hint that the movie was metaphorical for school shootings. This choice made no sense, considering that before this, the topic of school shootings was not brought up.
Though it was terrifying and creative, I thought that Cregger was trying to give the film a deeper meaning, bringing up school shootings when that topic doesn’t make sense in the context, leaving several plot holes.
Overall, despite the few plot holes, Weapons is just FUN. Watching the movie for the first time was especially fun, as the ending was really unpredictable and had me going “What?!” If you enjoy body horror movies, such as The Monkey (2025) or Barbarian (2022), Weapons is for you. For viewers who are more faint of heart or don’t appreciate the gore or explicit content, this movie may not be for you.
Weapons was a stunning, genre-bending horror film that is sure to make Cregger a legend in the horror movie world.
