Since 1956, Ann Arbor Public Schools has had a split enrollment system for students from Pioneer, Huron, Community and Skyline. So that students can take all the kinds of classes the district offers. In some schools they don’t have classes that other schools do; for example, Skyline does not have an Automotive program. If a student would like to take that class, they need to go to Pioneer or Huron for that program.
There are two types of split enrollment. First, CTE, or “Career and Technical Education.”
CTE offers students college credits and helps them gain industry skills for their future careers or further education.
Pioneer and Huron Automotive technology, Pioneer and Skyline offer business, cosmetology isn’t in any school but it’s in a separate building. Than the AAPS schools, Most
Students need to fill out a form to be split enrolled, and talk to their counselor to plan their schedule for the next year. While you have your course selection paper, you can select the course on the CTE section on the selection sheet.
If you are doing a CTE program you will have to go through an interview process in which they will ask you why you want to be in the program. There are very few people that are accepted in the program.
Then, there is a split enrollment where you can go to another school for another language or an arts program that your school doesn’t offer. For example Pioneer offers Arabic and skyline doesn’t. This type of split enrollment is different than the CTE program
CTE classes help you a lot, since some of these classes can connect you to industry-leading schools in the trade you are studying in. This connection helps you build your professional career quickly. For example, at Pioneer, if you do well in the Automotive class, the teacher can recommend you to companies like Ford or Chevrolet.
You can only take CTE classes your junior and senior year if you are split enrolling into the CTE program. If you are in the school that offers one of the programs, you can join your sophomore year or freshman year.
