Worldwide, school lunch has been a heavy topic, including at Skyline High School. The topic usually includes whether the school lunch looks edible or not. But now students are expressing they think it’s too unhealthy. I asked a few Skyline students what they thought about our food and the school store selections that are also included in our cafeteria. The answers were surprising.
“I like the fruit and Bosco sticks,” says Greta Wisely (‘29).
“I don’t think the school has enough healthy options. They only provide things like pizza, and burgers with fries…I think that they should provide healthier options that are just as tasty but also healthy,” says Sylvie Pinaud (‘29). “I normally get the nachos. I get it because it has a nice balance of vegetables…”
The school serves nachos every single day. Likely because of its popular demand amongst the students. With it, you’re served a small tray of tortilla chips. You can pick between chicken or beef, rice, cheese or beans. Then, separately, there is an assortment of toppings including tomatoes, lettuce, salsa or diced onions.
Bosco sticks are 2 small breadsticks filled with delicious mozzarella cheese and served with a cup of marinara sauce. The school also serves fresh fruit cups or dried cranberries when you leave the checkout.
“I like cookies at the school store.” says Joe Tobias (‘29). “I get the chocolate chip. Very original but tasty. The slushies are good too but they have a weird after taste. The food might be good but there’s definitely not a lot of healthy options there.”
At our student run store they serve options like slushies, pretzels, chips, and the newly added energy drinks. The healthiest thing they serve is probably the low fat nachos.
“I think kids at Skyline need to eat healthier because we would have better diets and we could be healthier people overall,” says Wisely.
