As the snow settles over Ann Arbor, students in the Ann Arbor community are embracing winter by sledding down frosty hills, gliding over fresh snow, and warming up with cups of hot chocolate. “I like to enjoy the winter season by spending time with my family and friends, especially when we go sledding,” says Amaya Dawson (‘27).
Many people start their winter fun at the top of a snowy hill, taking turns racing downhill while sleds line up and laughter fills the cold air. “I love to sled,” said Ariele Myers (‘27). “I love going down the hill. It gives me so much adrenaline and it’s really fun, especially when you fall off the sled.”
Another fun way to make the most out of the cold weather and the snow on the ground is by stuffing hand warmers into pockets and tightening helmets as the anticipation builds before the first ski. “My favorite thing to do during the snowy weather is skiing,” said Annika Darragh (‘27). “I’ve been skiing with my grandma and cousin since I was… four years old.”
One way to wrap up a fun day in the winter snow is to come inside, get cozy with a nice, warm cup of hot chocolate. “Drinking hot cocoa is my favorite thing to do during the cold season because it’s cozy…hot cocoa is yummy and brings the Christmas vibe,” said Marionna Byrd (‘29). When you are ready for a warm night inside after the chilling weather, having a cozy cup of hot cocoa by your side and a nice christmas movie will keep the christmas spirits in the air.
If you can’t wait to try these activities, here are some of the best places to go to make the most of the cold weather:
For sledding and ice skating a great place is Vets park, Ypsilanti High School, or some middle schools like Forsythe or Slauson. These awesome places have great hills to put the magic into the family fun while sledding. Bring some gear to stay warm and some sturdy sleds to keep the fun going!
A good place for skiing is Mt. Brighton or Kensington Metropark. These places have great big hills and wide open spaces for everyone to have fun! They even have smaller hills for the little ones! Make sure to stay warm and have fun this holiday season!
And of course, you can enjoy your hot chocolate in the comfort of your own home! To buy some good hot chocolate, you can go to a local store, or some stores that have great hot cocoa are Washtenaw Dairy or Michigan Creamery.
