Maybe the story of Finney and Gwen didn’t end when the killer died… could there be more to uncover?
It may be past Halloween, but The Black Phone 2 (rated R) will have you wanting to keep the spooky vibes going into next year. It has been released on streaming platforms like Prime Video, Apple TV+, and Fandango. The Black Phone 2 is the long awaited sequel after the positive reactions and good reviews from The Black Phone (2021).
Black Phone 2 is about The Grabber, a kidnapper and murderer in siblings Finney and Gwen’s town. In The Black Phone (1), Finney kills and defeats The Grabber…or so he thinks. In The Black Phone 2, the Grabber comes back in spirit and only seeks revenge against him, but also goes for the person Finney loves the most: Gwen. Gwen sees something important in her dream, so she goes to investigate with Finney and their friend Ernie.
If you’re searching for a good ‘80s style horror movie, you need to watch this film. Gwen’s dreams can predict the future, and if anyone gets hurt in her dream they get hurt in real life, including her. The filming style of her dreams is disturbing, but also really interesting. I like how the recordings of some scenes are very shaky and blurry, as if I’m running with them.

It might just be because I get scared very easily, but the jumpscares in this movie are really surprising and perfectly timed. There aren’t so many that you become “immune” to being scared, but just enough to get your heart racing. The scariest scenes for me to watch were the ones with the “zombie kids” that are a big part of Gwen’s dreams.
A downside to this movie for me would be that it’s supernatural, and I personally don’t like that genre much, but if you’re a fan of that type of film then that might just be another plus.
If you like jumpscares, supernatural films, and/or thrillers, I would definitely recommend this film to you. A movie you might like if you like this The Black Phone 2 and vice versa is Nightmare On Elm Street because it also shares the same topics of killers in dreams.
All in all, I would rate The Black Phone 2 a 9/10. I didn’t think that The Black Phone needed a sequel, but I’m actually really happy with this movie and I’m glad the story didn’t end at the first one. There were parts of the film that were scary, funny, and sad, but without a doubt all scenes evoked a lot of emotions in me.
