Despite being older than other crime drama films, Scarface (1983) remains a classic gangster thriller starring Al Pacino as Tony Montana, a Cuban refugee who later becomes one of the most rich and powerful drug lords in Miami.
The movie portrays some of the challenges Tony faces while he climbs up in life from getting to the USA and getting a job to becoming a drug lord. He is very independent and nonchalant, which is something that gives a good vibe to the movie despite doing all the bad things he does. He is still likeable throughout the movie.
However, all of his success with his mansion, cars, and huge mountain of cocaine offer no fulfillment to his life. There is no fulfillment to his life at all. Although throughout the movie he talks about having a lot of things his main goal was to have money, power was something that he felt he was missing.
I liked the quotes that Tony says throughout the film, like “The eyes never lie, chico.” Especially in Tony’s life, the eyes never lie about people’s true intentions.
People may think the movie is old, but I liked the way the characters dress. The way people dressed in the movie give it more of an 80’s mafia vibe to the movie. And the cars that Tony has make him seem rich and powerful.
Although this movie is 41 years old, I think it’s still up there as one of the best gangster movies. I personally don’t think it is out-dated at all and not corny – mostly it’s more of a serious movie.
One of the most controversial things in the movie is the amount of profanity. I do think it gives a better vibe since it portrays a drug lord’s life showing the reality on how things are.
Although the quality of the film is different from movies now, it still offers a good lesson for people. It shows some of the consequences of doing bad things like killing or selling drugs. Listen to Tony Montana, if you don’t want to go through jail or have to live with always watching your back.
