Are you looking for a movie that has mystery, drama, and humor mixed together perfectly? The film you’re looking for might be The Thursday Murder Club (2025, Netflix).
In The Thursday Murder Club, there are four elderly main characters in a retirement home and who make up The Thursday Murder Club. Together, they work on this cold case, trying to figure out who murdered the co-owner of the retirement home. The co-owner was the only one who was keeping the second owner from tearing up the cemetery and kicking everyone out of the retirement home. They work with a local police officer to figure out the murder.
The people writing this film did an awesome job slowly letting out information so that the audience also gets to figure it out with the characters. For example, Elizabeth, Ron, Joyce, and Ibrahim start out solving a cold case of some random girl. Then, there’s a murder in their retirement home, so they stop trying to solve that case and work on the retirement home murder. After they start solving it, the story reveals little pieces of information. There are some clues from the beginning of the movie like when they were solving a cold case and there was a murder. Whenever movies or books do this, it’s like you are trying to solve the mystery too.
The humor in this movie is very sarcastic. A lot of it is the characters calling each other names like “idiot” under their breath. There are also moments when a character will say just what the audience is thinking. A lot of people like to call this type of humor typical, witty british humor which is fitting because this film was set in England. This type of humor has a lot of clever wordplay and very dry humor.
The casting for this movie is excellent and the actors do a great job of playing out their parts. Elizabeth (Hellen Mirren), the main character who created the club, is especially good at making connections. Her past job was international relations. Ron (Pierce Brosnan) is very loyal to the group and makes most of the jokes in the film. He was a trade union activist so he likes things to be fair. Joyce (Celia Imrie) is like the grandma of the group. She makes them cake and is very sweet. She’s a retired nurse, so she helps a lot. Ibrahim (Ben Kingsley) is a retired psychiatrist, so he keeps the calm in the group. This group of actors work very well together and their characters. They all balance each other out, in a way. Because Elizabeth and Ron are more outgoing, they fit together. Ibrahim and Joyce are both more calm and reserved.
Overall, I think that this movie is great. It has a funny and interesting plot and good actors. If you are looking for a really good and cozy film that you can watch the whole family, this is the one.
