School is coming to an end, summer is close by, and people are starting to create their summer playlists. What are some “must have” songs on Skyline’s playlists? What are 2024’s summer “bangers”?
Listening to music is a great way to encompass the feeling of summer, to experience it. Some songs just have the feeling of summer. According to a recent Skyline Post survey of students at our school, the music genre R&B is the best summer genre, with artists such as the Weeknd, SZA, Tory Lanez, Jhené Aiko, Brent Faiyaz, Daniel Cesar, Frank Ocean and many more.
When asked “What is your favorite artist to listen to in the summer,” a number of students answered Frank Ocean. This artist’s top five most popular songs on Spotify are “Pink + White,” “Thinking Bout You,” “Ivy,” “Lost,” and “Novacane.” In my opinion, Ocean’s best summer song is “Swim Good.” The water, beach and swimming in the song give a summer vibe: the lyrics “kick off my shoes, and swim good” added onto the upbeat music create a summer aura.
Summer songs and bangers become popular through friends, family, online, and especially TikTok, Snapchat, and Instagram. This year, many songs have made appearances as the most “summery” song.
One song that has caught the attention of many social media users is “lady killers II” by G-Eazy and Christoph Andersson. The song’s popular lyric “make her disappear just like poof, and she’s gone” was the main reason it gained so much attention. The person filming turns the flash on and after the word “poof” the flashlight turns off and the person in the video seems as if they disappear.
“Sundress” by ASAP Rocky has been one of my all time favorite summer songs. The song just reminds me of summer and camp especially, with the beat and music’s chill and lighthearted tone. For long car rides in summer, “Sundress” by ASAP Rocky is the song for you.
Another classic summer song that for sure will be a 2024 banger is “Pursuit of Happiness” by Kid Cudi. Before summer ends, students and teens will post summer photo and video dumps summarizing their summer in one video. “Pursuit of Happiness” is almost always the background song to these summer dumps.
My final song of the summer has to be “The Thrill” by Whiz Khalifa and Empire of the Sun. The song so greatly encompasses the feeling that summer is arriving: the time to have fun and be free from school and the long drooling hours of work. Listening to this song, you hear the lyrics “we are always running for the thrill of it,” with an upbeat tune. Listening to this song represents the exciting thrill of summer that many look forward to at the end of the school year.
