As winter approaches, the Black Student Union (BSU) students are partnering with Food Gatherers to assist families in need. This effort stems from their wish to raise awareness, promote kindness, and remind students that helping others is important.
“Food Gatherers is a nonprofit based out of Ann Arbor, Michigan that helps families, feeds the homeless and impoverished individuals,” says BSU adviser and College/Career Counselor Anthony Woodford. Food Gatherers partners with different schools to provide free or very low cost food.
Skyline has boxes to put the canned goods in. The boxes will be around the school until February 1st, 2026.
Event lead says their main reason why they wanted to plan this fundrasier, “…helping plan this fundraiser [allows me to] gain experience within BSU,” says Ari Fritzsch (’26). “With this being my first fundrasier that i’ve been planning I can grow in that area.”
BSU leaders say their goal is to inspire more students to get involved and understand why supporting local families matters. “I know that a lot of families may need food for this winter,” says BSU leader Kamaria Scott (‘26). “I hope that this food drive makes people want to help more around the community.”
Another BSU leader shares a similar passion for giving back, emphasizing that the drive is also about spreading awareness and encouraging more people to help. They aim “to help the ones in need and to spread awareness,” says Keith Forest (‘26). BSU wants donations to be as “nourishing as possible to donate to those in need.”
BSU hopes to create a lasting impact on both the school community and help as many local families as possible this winter.
