Michigan football stars are making noise in the NFL this season, with fans saying former Wolverines like Aidan Hutchinson playing for the Detroit Lions and Blake Corum playing for the Los Angeles Rams are proving themselves against pro competition.
“He was probably one of the best defensive players I’ve ever seen for Michigan,” says Henry Ward (‘26). “Even after his injury, he’s come back brilliantly, and I think he can still break records.”
Hutchinson, a standout defensive end who set Michigan’s single-season sack record, was drafted by the Detroit Lions in 2022.
“I’ve watched him since I was in elementary school,” says Ward. “He’s always been the best at what he does.”
After a broken leg last year, Hutchinson has started strong this season, already recording four sacks.
“I want at least 12 sacks from Hutchinson this year,” Ward said. “The Lions have a real shot at the playoffs, maybe even the Super Bowl.”
Running back Blake Corum is another Michigan favorite now. He plays for the Los Angeles Rams and helped Michigan reach the 2023 national championship with a touchdown run against Alabama.
“He probably goes down as one of the greatest running backs in the history of Michigan football,” says Skyline Business teacher Craig Jobe. “That run against Alabama is legendary.”
Corum now plays for the Los Angeles Rams, sharing carries with the backfield rotation.
“He’s a tough runner. He gets the tough yards,” Jobe said. “Most NFL teams split carries between two backs, so I think he’ll start to get more opportunities this year.”
Quarterback J.J. McCarthy, who played at Michigan, is now in his first NFL season with the Minnesota Vikings. Moving from college football to the NFL is a big change, and J.J. needs to stay healthy and learn how to handle tough defenses to do well. He has shown some good moments, but he still has a lot to learn.
If he keeps playing and doesn’t get hurt, J.J. could throw for about 3,000 yards and over 20 touchdowns this season. That would be a strong start for a rookie. The Vikings are giving him time to grow and hope he can be their starting quarterback for years to come.
At Michigan, more players are getting ready for the NFL. Running Back Justice Haynes is getting attention because he is fast, strong, and is a powerful runner. On defense, Ernest Hausman is also standing out. He is quick and powerful, and looks to finish the year off on a high note
