Trent Drench (‘29) or “TJ” is definitely an impressive freshman: this year, he made both varsity football, as a running back and the varsity lacrosse teams typically reserved for more experienced players. TJ has proven that if you are truly a motivated and athletic individual, age really does not make a difference.
His motivation is clearly shown through his sportsmanship, discipline, and drive. “Every time I step on the field, I want to prove that age doesn’t matter if you work harder than everyone else. I stay motivated because I know my teammates count on me, and I want to keep getting better every single day.”
On the football field, TJ came out this Fall with an incredible amount of confidence, a tremendous will to fight, and an ability to play with no quit, no matter the situation. TJ brings an older mentality with him onto the football field due to the level of composure that he shows. “TJ doesn’t carry himself like a freshman,” said coach Broderick Smith. “His focus, discipline, and leadership are qualities you usually see from upperclassmen, and that’s a big reason he earned a varsity spot so early.”
TJ is equally dominant on the varsity lacrosse field. His speed, athleticism, and understanding for the game make him competitive on the varsity level against older opponents. He embraces team play and is driven to motivate those around him to be their best. “TJ pushes everyone around him to work harder,” said lacrosse coach Isaiah Dehn.
Whether it’s to make a defensive stop or to pick up a loose ball or to set up a pass, TJ puts all his effort into every situation on the field because it is what’s best for the team.
It is very difficult to participate in two varsity sports. However, TJ is always trying to make himself a better individual and never settles to just be “good enough.”
“People might look at me and see that I’m just a freshman, but I am working hard every day to prove that I deserve to be out here with these guys,” says TJ.
“It’s not over when you lose; it’s over when you quit.”
