On Friday, August 29th, under the bright lights of Friday night football, Skyline running back Lyuji Miki (‘26) set a new record of six touchdowns against Annapolis High School.
It was Skyline’s first game of the season versus Annapolis High School. This night has become a night to remember. “It was a feeling that we want to experience one more time,” said head football coach Brodrick Smith.
The previous record was set by Tommy Fry (‘23) with a total of five touchdowns against Pioneer High School. “I felt good,” said Miki. “I was really tired, though.”
Skyline started off this game as they would any other, just playing to win. As the game went on, Miki started to stand out. After the team’s fifth touchdown, Smith decided to take Miki out of the game because the team had it in the bag, but as that happened, one of the coaches was notified that Miki was just one touchdown away from the record.
“Once we found out that it was attainable, it was right there in the fingertips, it became an easy decision to let him go back in the game,” said Smith.
During the next rush for Skyline, the team fed the ball to Miki, allowing him to take it home for one last touchdown. “It was a special moment, not just for Miki, but for Skyline as a whole, just to kind of add some energy to our program,” said Smith.
Miki had a huge impact on the game overall, leading the Eagles to a dominant 63-0 victory over Annapolis High School.
This game was a big moment for Miki and the football team, but also for the whole school. “The student section went ballistic,” said Eagle’s Nest leader Nico DeYoung (‘26). “Not only did we win the game, but someone in our class broke a school record.” Miki’s enthusiasm was translated directly to the student section. “He ran over to the student section [and continued through the line giving highfives,] and it was amazing,” said student section leader Cece Miller (‘26).
Skyline High School has only been open for seventeen years, and Miki has now put himself in its growing legacy.
