Have you ever taken a chaotic road trip with your family? Skyline’s Fall play centers around Don Browning (Will Powers (‘26)) traveling and having flashbacks to his younger self when his whole family would go on long trips. “It’s very relatable,” said director Kristine Stephens. “If you come from a family in which you’ve gone on road trips and been stuck in a car and been lost, and seen your family fighting…it’s really fun.”
The play features lots of creative and complicated scenery that can flip over for easy background changes. The set’s fake car holds several actors. “The construction team and props and painting all worked together to create a car for the family to sit in,” says stage manager and four-year tech member, Margaret Sansburn (‘26). “[The] backgrounds are pillars that can turn around to have different backgrounds for different scenes that they’re in. It might seem simple, because there’s not that many pieces, but each piece has many different aspects to it.”

Even the actors struggle to keep their composure during the comedy scenes. “[There is a] physical section with a unicycle, where the uncle’s rolling it around…it’s a whole mess, and it’s so funny,” says Powers. “I’m not even supposed to be laughing at that point. I’m in another spot on the stage, and I’m supposed to be keeping my character. But it’s really hard at that moment, especially. I’ve broken character a couple times.”
Cast members encourage Skyline to come out and get involved in the next productions after Leaving Iowa. The theater is always welcoming to anyone wanting to join. “You’re gonna make so many friends. Everyone here is, no one’s like, super competitive, no one’s trying to put you down,” says Powers. “They’re just excited because we’re all just artistic people.”
