Skyline Varsity Volleyball is not just here to compete, but to dominate.
After last season’s district championship, the Eagles returned with confidence and a goal to prove that last year’s win wasn’t just luck. So far this season, they hold a 26-9-4 record, showing their determination to defend their title.
“I think it’s really important to defend our district title just because I know how hard we fought last year,” Captain Joci Wall said. “I truly think we aren’t the underdogs this time, so we can definitely have it in the bag if we keep the energy and fight from last year.”
The Eagles knew defending their title would not be an easy task, especially after facing experienced programs like Saline and Dexter. They battled Saline, falling 0-3, and later defeated Dexter 3-2 to keep their title hopes alive.
“I definitely think Saline will be our biggest competition this year,” said Teammate Livia Pierce (‘27). “There’s a lot of tension there after we beat them in the district finals last season.”
The team’s success has also been tied to its resilience. The team overcame midseason coaching changes last year and other challenges, forcing captains to step up and hold one another accountable.
“I think we were so successful because we had to work through adversity and changes of coaches,” said Setter Izzy Moe (‘27). “It brought us together as we all had to step up in holding each other accountable.”
Even with high expectations, Skyline’s players ensure that they focus on supporting one another during games and maintaining their composure in high-pressure situations.
“We handle the pressure by staying focused and trusting each other,” said DS Allison Lee (‘28). “That support helps us to work together and play as a team the best we can.”
Even through the ups and downs of a long season, the Eagles say their friendships and bonds help remind them why they play.
“In our game against Bedford, every single person on our team was cheering and just having fun,” Pierce said. “We were able to get a win against the team that took away a regional championship from us last year, and that energy is what keeps us going.”
With the regular season officially over, the Eagles finished strong on October 25th, competing for the league championship. They dominated the day, going 6-0 in conference play and dropping only one set to Saline, who had swept them previously. Skyline will now shift their focus to the postseason, where they’ll host districts starting on November 3.
After earning a first-round bye, the Eagles will advance directly to the District Semifinal, where they’ll face the winner of the first-round matchup between Pioneer and Huron, as they continue their pursuit of back-to-back district titles.
