Boys’ Golf

The Skyline Boys’ Golf team is having a good season. They have had a lot of tough matches but in their tournaments they placed within the top 10 every time. They have also been able to play at a range of different golf courses with a lot of different players getting a chance to compete.

“We’ve been able to play our whole team at various events and it’s given a lot of exposure to our whole team which is a nice challenge for some of the newer players,” said coach Melissa Schmidt.

The team is trying to follow in last year’s footsteps and win states in back to back years. The team just won Regionals, and heads to states this first week of June.

Crew

After a very successful fall season, the Skyline Crew team was ready to go at it again this Spring.  The  team won in sculling at both States and Midwests, and won second in women’s sweeps at States.

“We have had a great season with a lot of great accomplishments and are bringing multiple boats to nationals this year,” said Varsity Crew Captain Liam Black (‘24).

Nationals went very well for Skyline. “Most of the crews that we took to nationals were able to advance to finals and the girls’ jv 4x won, which was pretty amazing,” said Black.

Girls’ Soccer

The Skyline Girls’ soccer team started their season on the right foot. They cruised through their twelve games winning them all by a considerable margin and only allowing three goals in total throughout those twelve games.

“Our keepers have posted 10 shutouts, and we have scored 46 goals on the season. In order for us to have success we will need to continue playing stout defense and capitalize on our opportunities,” said Varsity Head Coach Chris Morgan.

One June 1, the girls won districts.  The team is currently in the top five for the state and is playing really well. “Our main goals for the remainder of the season are to win our league, and then carry the momentum into the state tournament! If we continue to play like we are capable of, and a little bit of luck, we have a really good shot at advancing in the tournament,” said Morgan.

Girls’ Tennis

The Skyline Girls had a very rocky start to their season because of the absence of their original head coach. There have been a lot of new challenges that have come with this situation but they have been able to persevere through them.

“It was challenging because there were so many questions we just couldn’t answer. We relied a lot on the team parents, who play a big part in the management of the team,” said Varsity Captain Isabella Somers.

The team aimed to make it four years in a row at the state championship. “To get to States we have to do pretty well at regionals,” said Somers, “Pioneer is usually in the final round.”

The team achieved third at regionals and competed at states this past weekend.

Girls’ Water Polo

Skyline Women’s Water Polo has found much success this season. According to the Michigan Water Polo Association (MWPA), the water polo team was “aiming for a strong showing at the State Tournament.”  The team was able to do just that: they got 3rd in the state, beating East Kentwood 11-6.

The women’s team had a great start to the season dominating their games. “These girls have what it takes and are pushing themselves every day to be the best they can,” said Coach Rebecca Godek.

Track

Skyline’s track and field team hit the ground running in their 2024 season facing many changes, including a new coaching staff and head coach Caryn Gehrke. With a huge intake of new participants, this team is making Skyline track history as being the biggest track team Skyline has ever had. “We’re stabilizing around 110 to 120 athletes, almost twice as big as the team was last year,” said Gehrke.

They’ve spent the season preparing for their meets where they’ve had many first place finishers. With the end of the season upon them, members are working hard to earn their spot at states and perhaps even win a state championship. “I care much more that we create a program where everyone is held to those expectations … I don’t care why they’re here, I care that while they’re here they work hard,” said Gehrke.

Softball

The Skyline Softball team’s season has been great so far. They have a record amount of new players that have been improving every day. Their record is 2-5 (as of May 6) but they have had a tough draw to open up the season.

“The season started off tough, playing the best teams in the conference to open the season. But as time has gone on we’ve only improved. Our last two games we had two mercies which was a really exciting moment for us,” said Varsity Captain Reyna Hyliard (‘24).

They learned a lot from those games against the top teams in the conference. Moving on the team will look to, “continue to grow and have fun with the game. Of course winning is fun but, [we] want to continue to build the program as a whole and support each other,” said Hyliard.

Boys’ Lacrosse

Boys’ lacrosse has done really well for the first season with the new head coach Isiah Dehn. During this year Skyline Boys’ lacrosse has beaten two rivals Huron and Saline who other than this year skyline lacrosse have not beaten Saline since the 2015-2016 season. “The hardest team to beat will be Saline, we haven’t beaten them in a long time and we are looking to beat them this year,” said Matthew Zwolensky (24).

As this is Dehn’s  first season he has some different goals for the team to achieve throughout the year, “I hope the team will hit their potential and for everyone to see how great they really are,” said coach Dehn.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Skyline girls’ lacrosse team had a good season. One of their highlights of their season was a win against their rival Pioneer. The team lost in the regional semi finals,  which they had won the year before.  They have set their sights on this goal for next year.

“We need to work on coming together as a team and honing in on our skills and improving our on field communications…I think that would really help us in the long run, especially against some of the better teams that we will have to play,” said player Cate Howard (‘25).

Baseball

The Skyline Baseball team had a pretty good start to their season with 5 wins under their belt and a new head coach. With the shocking leave of the old head coach, they worked hard to make a comeback and not get distracted by the change.

The team has been strong through their season, notably beating rival Pioneer 5-2 in early April. All in all their season has been strong and their new head coach has proven himself. “I was hired pretty close to the start of the season. So I want to make sure this year’s seniors experience is the best it possibly could. That’s with fun day to day activities or even off the field activities as well. I feel that I owe that to them,” said Kyle Cornell.
