New York Fashion Week has been around since 1943 as a way for designers in the fashion industry to flaunt their new work and get recognition for their impressive pieces.

Over the years, the glamorous event has represented turning over a new leaf and becoming the boldest, brightest, most unique version of yourself you can possibly be. It promotes leadership, creativity, and self-fulfillment in young fashion lovers.
Styles presented in the shows are bold and influential on the current clothing. Grunge, off-the-shoulder pieces, and lace were all featured in the 2025 show.
Skyline has already been implementing these unique styles into our daily wear in a more watered-down way. For example, instead of a full-length, sheer, lacey dress, a simple lace neckline is more of the high school standard—or at least Skyline standards.
So which is better: hallway, or runway?

The goth aesthetic has been a common style rotating in and out throughout the years, but this year it made a breakthrough on the runway at 2025’s show in New York. Coach, Tory Burch, Carolina Hererra, and other big brands opted for black, gothic styles and it’s no surprise that Skyline does too. Black sweatshirts, leggings, and pants are all frequently seen black clothing here at Skyline.
Goth on the runway looks like more dark, neutral baggy clothing. At Skyline, it seems to be the same. From slouchy sweaters to black baggy jeans these two interpretations of the goth aesthetic are pretty much the same on and off the runway. Because of that, I’d say between the two it’s a tie for the vibe I’d like in my closet.
Off-the-shoulder, 80’s pieces have also been a big hit at Skyline, recently. Whether it be graphic tees, long sleeves, or sweaters, students are all for it. But as Skyline leans in the direction of casual, Fashion Week designers seem to prefer a more classy approach. An off-shoulder black fold-over top paired with an elegant skirt to match seems magnificent for a cocktail party. However, a simple pair of wide-leg jeans with an off-shoulder tee seems more acceptable for the school environment. In this case, casual comfort takes the cake for best dressed.

A timeless material that has been seen throughout decades is lace and 2025 is no exception. At Skyline, simple lace necklines have been all the rage. However, after all the stunning lace full-length gowns and poofy lace dresses seen numerous times throughout 2025’s fashion shows, I think it’s time for the fancy fabric to have a bit more time to shine in the spotlight. Perhaps on bottom apparel as well, in skirts, patches on jeans, and more. For that, New York gets the gold.
After the fabulous fashions revealed on the catwalk, with some of my personal favorites (like lace), it’s hard to think there will be anything more glamorous. However, that’s the wonderful thing about fashion. It never dies. And let’s hope New York Fashion Week doesn’t either. Stay fashionable!
