Formerly known as the Latino Student Union (LSU), Águilas Unidas is a place where every student is welcome. Walking into Professora Lisa Phillips’ classroom, you can hear the cultural music and the urge to dance is impossible to contain. Águilas Unidas is a club where students can go to practice, learn, or speak Spanish freely.
“It’s a place where we can get together and talk about issues that are affecting Spanish speaking people,” says club administrator and teacher Phillips. “It’s also a place where you can practice your Spanish if you’re taking Spanish classes, a place to talk to your people, eat good food, listen to music, and talk about politics or whatever is on the students’ minds.”
Spanish teacher Graham Hannah originally founded the club in 2019 as an attempt to connect students of Latin origins and students wanting to learn more about the Latin culture or practice Spanish. Phillips eventually took over the club when Hannah became unavailable after school, in order to keep this important club going. (Hannah is one of several Skyline teachers who teaches at more than one AAPS school location.)
“I like to encourage students from my regular Spanish classes to come to the club,” says Phillips. “It’s a good place to practice and build community with people who speak Spanish here at school. Of course, if you’re trying to learn Spanish, it’s best to make some friends who speak Spanish.”
Students involved in Aguilas Unidas feel brought together and welcomed in the environment. They feel closer to people from similar cultures and backgrounds and have felt their Spanish skills and cultural knowledge increase significantly.
“It feels like a warm, inviting space for anyone interested in Spanish culture or those who have Spanish heritage and are just looking for a welcoming place to stay,” says Genevieve Soia (‘28). “Personally, I was drawn to it because my family is Mexican, and I thought it would be a great opportunity to meet others with similar backgrounds. It’s nice to spend time with people and really get to know them, everyone is so friendly.”
Not only does the club spend time together and practice Spanish, but they raise funds for worthy causes. Currently, the fundraiser planned with Sophia Narzan (‘26) will include members of the club bringing in items such as clothes, toiletries, and food for students in need here at Skyline.
“She had a passion project planned to have a thrift store with the proceeds going to a good cause,” says Xander Hemmingway (‘25). “One good cause that we were thinking of contributing would be clothes for students who can’t afford their own and are in need of some extras.”

Anteriormente conocida como LSU, Águilas Unidas es un lugar donde todos los estudiantes son bienvenidos. Entrando en el salón de la Profesora Phillips se puede escuchar música cultural y las ganas de querer billar son imposibles de contener. Llegando al salòn todos los estudiantes te dan la bienvenida al club Águilas Unidas.
El señor Graham Hannah fundó originalmente el club en 2019 con el objetivo de conectar a estudiantes de origen latino con estudiantes que querían aprender más sobre la cultura latina o practicar español. La profesora Lisa Phillips finalmente se hizo cargo del club cuando Hannah no estuvo disponible después de la escuela para mantener este importante club en funcionamiento.
Águilas Unidas es un club donde los estudiantes pueden hablar español y aprender más de otras culturas Hispanas y también aprender más el español. Le hicimos unas preguntas a maestros y estudiantes sobre Águilas Unidas y esto es lo que nos dijeron – “Yo creo que es lugar que podemos reunirnos y hablar de temas que tratan de la gente que habla español pero también es un lugar que se puede practicar el español si estás tomando clases de español y un lugar para hablar con tu gente y comer comida buena y escuchar música o hablar de la política o lo que esté en la mente de los estudiantes.”
Los jueves Águilas Unidas transforman el salón de Lisa Phillips (A407) en un lugar donde estudiantes que hablan español y estudiantes que quieren aprender español se juntan. “Me gusta alentar los estudiantes de mis clases regulares que Águilas Unidas es un buen lugar para practicar y también tener una comunidad en la escuela con personas que hablan español.”
Los estudiantes que participan en Águilas Unidas se sienten unidos y acogidos en el entorno. Se sienten más cerca de personas de culturas y orígenes similares y han notado que sus habilidades en español y su conocimiento cultural aumentan significativamente.
Águilas Unidas es grandioso porque es un lugar en donde puedes aprender español y tener nuevas amistades. “Se siente como un espacio cálido y acogedor para cualquier estudiante que quiere aprender sobre la cultura, también si eres hispana y quieres estar en un lugar donde te sientes bienvenido. Yo tengo familia Mexicana y pensé que sería una gran oportunidad para conocer más estudiantes lationos.”
El club no solo pasa tiempo juntos y practica español, sino que también incluye actividades de recaudación de fondos y planificación en sus reuniones. Actualmente, la recaudación de fondos planificada con Sophia Narzan (‘26) incluirá a miembros del club que traerán artículos como ropa, artículos de tocador y alimentos para los estudiantes necesitados aquí en Skyline. “Ella tenía un proyecto apasionante planeado para tener una tienda de segunda mano y las ganancias se destinarán a una buena causa,” dijo Xander Hemmingway (‘25). “Una buena causa a la que estábamos pensando contribuir sería ropa para los estudiantes que no pueden comprar la suya y necesitan algunos extras.”
