School is canceled due to snow, causing students to trade textbooks for blankets and lesson plans for snowball fights. But what exactly do they do with an unexpected day off?
Cold and snowy days are sudden school breaks due to severe winter weather, making it difficult or unsafe to make it to school. From cozy movie marathons to creative indoor projects, snow days are filled with fun, relaxation, and for some, a little bit of learning. Some students use this time to catch up on work, engage in hobbies, or spend time with family and friends.
Joy Sauers (‘26) says, “I like to stay home, lay down on the couch, and binge watch my favorite shows.”
SomeSkyline students use this opportunity to catch up on much-needed rest, allowing them to recover from the sleep they may have lost during busy school weeks. “I like sleeping because when I sleep I feel relaxed and less sore in the morning,” says Dareen Abduljaber (‘25). “I would do that everyday if I could.”
Zach Huber (‘25) also enjoys sleeping during cold, frosty days. “I enjoy sleeping because it gives me an escape from the dull and drab life that exists around me.” Huber said. “In my dreams, I can be whomever I desire.”
Several Skyline students seize this opportunity to head outdoors and enjoy the snow while playing with their pets. “During snow days after I happily sleep in. I like to take my dog outside and we play in the snow,” says Ariana Flores (‘26). “My dog really likes eating snow and enjoys rolling around in it. Seeing her so happy to burn energy makes me happy.”
Elise Fettig (‘26) also brings her pet outside on wintry, snowy days. “I like to build snowmen and walk my dog who loves the snow,” Fettig said. “She is part husky.”
