As Michigan weather rapidly transforms from warm, sunny days to sudden temperature drops in the fall, the Skyline community reflects these changes through fashion. This begs the question: how do students merge function with fashion in their seasonal wardrobes?
From chunky knit sweaters to fuzzy hats and boots, winter is the ideal season for some students to show off their favorite styles while still keeping warm. “I like wearing and layering thick, warm clothes year-round, so this weather accommodates my style perfectly,” said student Ash Rowley (‘25). “My favorite clothing item is my Carhart jacket, and I’ll wear my beanie and gloves if it’s really cold.”
While students like Rowley enjoy the opportunities to layer for the weather, others find it uncomfortable to manage so many clothing items at once. “I love wearing my fluffy jackets under my coat in the winter,” said student Sanjit Chadha (‘25). “However, it can feel suffocating since there are so many layers I need to wear.”
With temperatures fluctuating throughout the day between the classrooms and the outdoors, wardrobe changes may be sought after to keep style and comfort during the school day. Here are some quick tips to add flair to your winter clothing:
- Sweaters can be fashioned in so many ways. Try a vest or a cardigan to enhance your look and add depth to your outfit.
- If you get too cold to wear your favorite t-shirts, consider patterned sweaters and other long-sleeves to wear underneath. You can show off your favorite clothes while keeping warm.
- Keep an extra jacket or flannel that you can easily take off during the day and hold on to in case you get cold again. Zip-ups and button-ups are great options to maintain the functionality of your outfit.
However, even if your fashion can’t fully acclimate to the weather, keeping your safety in mind is important. Whether it’s pajamas or jeans that you’re wearing, dress mindfully for your commutes and school days as we approach lower temperatures.
Happy styling!
