Skyline’s World Cuisine Club has flourished over the past year, attracting a diverse group of students, enthusiastic to explore global cuisine through dynamic gatherings and cultural exchanges.
Students enjoy new and delicious dishes while also enhancing their cultural knowledge. “I’ve learned a lot about different cultures, such as where PaVe, the Brazilian dessert, comes from and its significance. We’ve also had sushi and pastas,” says club member Mary Ellen Vance (‘25). “It’s just really fun to get educated in this type of environment and I really enjoy it.”
The club’s idea originated in class, Fall of 2023, with a group of friends seeking to create a club to further their passions for leadership and cultural exploration. Together, the students formed the World Cuisine Club. “We wanted to promote and learn about other cultures through a fun and interactive way,” says club social media manager Kamryn Lindsey (‘25), “while also making a positive impact on the Skyline student body.”
Among the 86 current clubs Skyline offers, World Cuisine continues to gain popularity among the student body. “We started the club last year,” explains Lindsey, “but the club only really grew in size this year because we were part of the club fair.” Today there are over 80 members signed up for the club.
The club meets every other Tuesday after school in Christopher Naar’s classroom, C405. “We’ll organize who’s going to bring the food and we’ll help make slideshows discussing the featured food,” says member Ainsley Vendola (‘25). “Everyone has the opportunity to bring in food if they wish.”
World cuisine is constantly growing in size. “Every week that we have it, it seems like the club is getting larger and more diverse,” says Naar. “You learn a little bit about a culture and you get to sample food from that culture that the students made themselves.”
“The World Cuisine Club is a great way to get to know other students,” says Vendola. “I feel like it’s a really fun way to learn about other cultures and try foods that you wouldn’t have originally tried if you hadn’t been a part of our club.”
