Music has the ability to connect people despite borders and barriers that may be in place. If you love music and have interest in learning how to create soundtracks like your favorite artists, then the Songwriting Club may be for you.
The Songwriting Club meets Wednesdays at 3:00 pm in room C110. “We usually write the start of a song, get the bones of the song done, or we do kind of a battle of the bands thing,” says Roman Gattuso (‘27), head of the club. “Then the next week we move on or we continue making the song.”
This school year will be the club’s fourth year in action. Since their start back in 2020 during COVID, the club has accomplished much, including the release of a song last year titled ‘TV MAN.’ “Our plan was to make a whole album by the end of the club,” said Owen DeVries (‘27), club member. “But we only released the one song.”
The club creates in many genres other than those shown in their music. “So normally, when we’re writing songs, we start genreless with a piano and someone singing to get the idea down,” says DeVries. “And from there we transform it into really any genre we want.”
Anyone concerned about entry barriers involving music knowledge has no need to worry. Club members are open and ready to teach anyone who is coming with a willingness to learn. “You can come in with absolutely nothing,” said DeVries. “We want to make sure that people know it is open to all and that we are here to teach and help.”
As for future plans, the club has ambitious goals. Gattuso says, “we have plans to maybe figure out some way to reach out to an elementary music class and teach them music.”
