Skyline’s Writing Center has become the Learning Center. Now, when students are seeking help for both writing and math, they can come to Skylines’ Learning Center. This year the Writing Center decided to rebrand and become a more versatile place to help people with not only writing but math as well.
The center is open every hour of the school day, including both lunches.
“We changed the name to Learning Center to become more inclusive,” says Writing Center Tutor Elle Wong (‘25). “We have added math mentors to our group of tutors so it didn’t make sense to just have the title be ‘Writing Center.’”
In the past, the math mentors and writing center tutors have not been working in the same room, as they did not tutor the same things. However, due to budget cuts throughout the district, the two groups of tutors combined and now share a Skytime class in what was formerly the Writing Center.
“I think having math mentors is gonna be helpful for me because I need a lot of math help,” Garrow says, “I’ll probably visit them often.”
Math mentors can help with almost any level of math offered at Skyline. “I can tutor all the way up to AP Pre-Calculus,” says math mentor Ainsley Vendola (‘25).
“I feel really hopeful and excited about the idea of math mentors having their own Skytime classroom with the tutors of The Writing Center,” says Jeffrey Oleksinski, head of the Math Mentors program. “It helps to have a classroom where you can report back to and collaborate with others.”
Tutors and students alike are excited for the new change and rebrand that is happening to the Learning Center this year.
