Have you ever struggled to find an open bathroom, had trouble getting around the building due to stairwells being locked, or been forced to use the elevator after school ends?

At 3:00 pm, Skyline’s Community Assistants (CA’S) lock various bathrooms and stairwells.  Students have not received information about which stairwells and bathrooms are closed, resulting in confusion and frustration when staying after for clubs, sports, and extra help.

The Skyline Post asked, and found these answers about what is locked or open – and why:

  • LOCKED:
    • The Northeast (NE) B stairwell
    • The C stairwell – locked on all floors
    • The doors to the main office.
    • 3rd and 4th floor bathrooms: locked on one side
    • Commons Bathrooms: locked unless there is an event
    • First floor bathrooms

  • OPEN:
    • The only way to get to the first floor is through the staircase located at the student entrance
    • The Northwest (NW) B stairwell is open to the second, third and fourth floors
    • One bathroom on third and fourth floors

Doors are locked to ensure the safety and security of the Skyline students and staff. “By 3:15, all students remaining in the building should be in a supervised club meeting, sports practice, activity etc.,” says SLC Principal for Equality & Academic Innovation Delsie Sissoko, in charge of building operations. “Any students waiting for a ride should do so by the student entrance or outside. No unsupervised students are allowed in the building after 3:15.”

Some students have concerns about getting locked in the stairwells. “If you find yourself stuck in a stairwell,” says Sissoko, “you will always be able to exit the building.  Then to reenter the building, students can ring the bell that has a security camera located by the student entrance.”

“Since anyone that is here for a planned activity, or clubs or sports [is] here with a staff member,” says Jaimia Plancich, former Community Assistant (CA) and current SLC Office Professional, “and staff members have keys to all stairwells and bathrooms and access to anywhere in the building… [students] should be with that staff member and should not be leaving and wandering around the building.”
