October 8th, 2025, The Skyline Post spent the day at the annual Michigan Interscholastic Press Association (MIPA) Fall Conference learning from and connecting with other student and professional journalists.
The MIPA conference is a place where different school-sponsored journalism programs come together to hear lectures about how to improve their reporting, writing, and photography.
The Skyline Post was even privy to a one-on-one critique session with a MIPA leader, where we got tips on the composition of the newspaper, text size, and photo quality. There were many sessions with professional journalists and expert teachers, and students to pick from. Students were free to roam room to room to find the ones they wanted to attend.
This year, our very own Editor-in-Chief, Ashley Han (‘25), gave a presentation on censorship in student newspapers and the work to pass state laws to protect student press freedoms.
In between sessions or before lunch, students headed to the main hall to pick up newspapers and magazines from other schools, view colleges with journalism programs, or make cute animals out of pipe cleaners.
With a food court and expert-led sessions, anyone attending is bound to have a good, informative time. Anyone interested in attending can join the journalism class and come along next fall.
