Skyline swimmers’ class of 2028 is gearing up for a big next season, aiming to improve and become state champions. With a strong influx of seven freshmen this past season, the team believes this new class will be a driving force in their journey toward the top.
This season, the team went 4-4, placing 4th at SEC and 11th at states. They’re eager to improve these results in the coming years by continuing to strengthen their team dynamic and individual performances.
“Strict Coaching from Mojo and the support from senior captains have helped many freshmen get better at swimming,” says Evan Pokryfke (‘28).
Two freshmen have already made varsity, while Pokryfke even made it to states, showcasing the depth of talent on the team. With such promising new swimmers, the Skyline swim team is looking to make a significant splash in the city and beyond next season.
“I feel the connections you make with the team, especially Coach Maureen Murrett (Mo-Jo) and Paul Griffith, help you feel more supported when you join,” says Emmett Strait (‘28). “Especially if it is your first time swimming or if you are new to the sport.”
Building strong connections on a team is key to improvement, especially in a sport like swimming, which is often individual. Coach Mo-Jo is well-regarded for fostering this sense of teamwork and supporting athletes. While it can be tough for freshmen to connect at first, relays and time spent with teammates help build this bond.
“I think being on the swim team helps students learn how to take personal accountability, manage their time, and understand the value of hard work,” says Murett.
