After 11 years of on-and-off development, A Minecraft Movie finally arrived in theaters on Friday, April 4th, 2025. The long-awaited video game movie proved an instant hit, earning 163 million dollars in the opening weekend, according to IMDb. It also achieved the highest-grossing opening for a video game movie adaptation ever, and the biggest opening of the year as of April 2025.
Overall, A Minecraft Movie was really good, but in its own unique way. It is super unserious, and that’s exactly what fans love about it.
A Minecraft Movie’s uniqueness comes from many iconic quotes throughout the movie, mainly by Steve (Jack Black): lines like “I am Steve,” “they love crushing a loaf,” his whole hot lava chicken song, and most famously his “Chicken Jockey” line, all made the crowd go wild in every theater screening the movie across the world.
Movieseers have been reposting clips that are so unfunny that they’re funny, increasing the movie’s popularity even more. It’s become somewhat of a trend to just go to the movie to see these moments just for yourself on the big screen, making the movie even more popular.
Kids love A Minecraft Movie especially because most people grew up playing Minecraft. Because of the rumors of the film since 2014, fans are thrilled to finally see it actually become a thing.
The plot was a little bland and simple and I wish it was expanded on a bit more. To be fair, though, making a good plot for A Minecraft Movie would be hard to do when playing Minecraft, as the game itself doesn’t have an end goal. Four individuals — Henry, Natilie, Garett, and Dawn — get sucked into a portal that takes them into Minecraft and to get home they’ll need to understand how to live in Minecraft. They meet Steve — played by Jack Black — during the first night, who helps them survive throughout the movie. The plot is super simple, but as a kids’ movie, it doesn’t need the best plot ever.
A Minecraft Movie has an incredible cast, with Jack Black perfectly embodying Steve, a super loveable Overworld-obsessed hero. Black plays Steve flawlessly, being this super charming character who loves this world he’s created.
Jason Momoa delivered an incredible role as Garrett Garrison, a former video game champion who can’t reclaim his past glory. Garrion has this inflated ego personality who needs to be the leader of the group, demanding validation from the others.
Emma Myers is fantastic as Natalie, portraying her as a caring and protective older sister to Henry. She brings a warm personality to the role, which she plays exceptionally well.
Sebastian Hansen also impresses as Henry, bringing a genuine warmth and energy that makes his character stand out. As someone who hasn’t really acted a whole lot, he did an amazing job.
The antagonist, Malgosha, a Pig-like creature living in the nether (a hell-like dimension) looks for the Orb of dominance (how the four individuals got into Minecraft) to take over the overworld in search of gold and destroying creativity. The character development throughout the movie wasn’t very good, as most of the characters’ arcs were very stagnant.
A Minecraft Movie isn’t trying to win Oscars; it’s trying to win hearts. The plot might be somewhat bland, but the movie isn’t trying to be serious, and that’s the beauty of it.
