Dexter: Original Sin (Showtime) is a spinoff from one of the most popular TV shows to date: Dexter. Many fans have been unhappy with the previous spinoff, Dexter: New Blood, and the original series was known to be bad with endings.
So, how is Dexter: Original Sin?
Dexter: Original Sin is a prequel to the widely acclaimed Dexter (2008). It begins with the story of Dexter in his late teens, where his “dark passenger” (Dexter’s evil side) takes form.
Original Sin just about tops New Blood in every regard. New Blood was a letdown to many longtime fans to the show, whereas Original Sin dives into the history of Dexter in a really entertaining way. Many characters from the original series, including several antagonists, can be seen in their early stages, as well.
Original Sin also has very impressive casting. Many of the actors casted really do look like younger versions of the original actors. They do a very impressive job at portraying them, matching the feel of the original characters very accurately. In particular, Vince Masuka, with his infamous deviant personality, is portrayed perfectly.
Original Sin does, however, have a weakness that seems to bother a lot of long time fans: some actors often feel like cosplayers of the original characters. A good example of this would be Angel Batista, who is of similar age to Dexter in this show, yet looks 40, as is the actor. The same hat and facial hair, yet a much different face makes it really feel like cosplay. Some of the the casting left many fans feeling confused and even unhappy.
The ending of Dexter: Original Sin really is much more satisfying than many before it. Of course, this is just the first season. However, this is a very good sign for future seasons of this show, and perhaps even future shows.
Overall, Original Sin is a refreshing spinoff to the original series that many fans think was needed. It does justice to the original show and adds a lot to the backstory. I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoyed the original show, however I recommend that you watch the original series before jumping to this, as it requires a decent bit of prior knowledge to enjoy it at its fullest. It overall succeeds as both a show and a prequel to the original Dexter (2006).
