Skyron hockey continues to thrive with a mix of two talented groups of women’s ice hockey players from Ann Arbor Huron and Skyline. “This allows the girls the opportunity to play hockey,” says coach Robert Shannon. “There is not enough to form a team if we were separate.”
Connecting schools gives these players a chance to not just compete in a sport they love, but also to form new relationships with players they would have been competing against. “I have enjoyed getting to connect and meet people from other schools that I previously wouldn’t have met,” said Molly Greenberg (‘26).
2024-2025 is the team’s 12th year competing. Over these past years, the team faced challenges. “The hardest part was getting enough players to form both a varsity and JV team,” said Shannon.
Combining schools has been helpful for numbers. “We are…able to reach a larger group of people to join the team,” says Greenberg. “Having two schools increases the amount of people we get to play. “
Skyron practices regularly at Vets Ice Rink. Outside of practice, the team works hard to become better players. “We get along really great as a team and the culture at practices,” said Corinne Sczomak (‘27).
High school sports can create relationships that athletes carry with them through their sports career, and the Skyron team is no different. “We sometimes will do team bonding activities or I will hang out with some of my teammates outside of hockey and connect with them more,” says Greenberg.
