When people think of Disney, they think of good old-fashioned, vibrant musicals. Despite Disney’s success with their classics, lately they seem to be straying away from the genius creativity they once had, with newer movies, sequels, or live-action remakes like live-action Lilo and Stitch, Moana 2, and Frozen 3.
Skyline fans are starting to feel Disney may be losing its reliability.
“I’m fairly indifferent to Disney,” says Madeline Clark (‘26). “In regards to the sequels and remakes, I feel like they’re just okay. I think the constant remakes and sequels are being overdone, and it feels like they’re making them because they know people will watch them, meaning they know they will make a profit.”
Kathryn Long (‘28) agrees. “I do not enjoy most Disney sequels. It is becoming glaringly obvious that these sequels are more about the revenue they’ll generate for Disney than the story. Some of the top-grossing movies are sequels, but I think by playing it safe like this, Disney is losing the charm it once had.”
A former animator from Disney, Janet Chen, has spoken out on YouTube about why she left her animation job at Disney. She believes the job is bureaucratic, dull, and sometimes even toxic. “Unqualified people fail upwards while many talented people are passed up for promotion and ignored,” says Chen. “Sometimes [this] can throw entire productions into chaos because of one person’s incompetence and ego.”
We grew up with so many good movies like Frozen, Tangled, or Moana that I think people are starting to realize how much of a decline Disney has gotten into content-wise. I loved Moana, but I don’t see why they needed to make a sequel. The old movies are nostalgic and whimsical, and the sequels are not doing them enough justice.
