2024 was one of the best years for music in a long time. Albums such as Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department, Kendrick Lamar’s GNX, Charli XCX’s Brat, Future and Metro Boomin’s We Don’t Trust You, Beyonce’s Cowboy Carter, and more highlighted the year, with many smaller artists creating a name for themselves with their newest projects.
“GNX and Might Delete Later were my favorites,” said Titus Reid (‘28). “I think that GNX has very good replayability, and the way J. Cole does his music is just better than other music out now. I also liked We Don’t Trust You by Future and Metro Boomin.”
David Powell (‘28) mirrored similar sentiment. “My favorite album was GNX by Kendrick Lamar,” said Powell. “GNX is very replayable and I could listen to it all day. I liked Might Delete Later as well.”
“The Secret of Us by Gracie Abrams was my favorite,” said Annabel Thomas-Rupley (‘28). “I just like Gracie Abrams a lot, so I think that it was pretty cool that she released a new album and kind of changed up her music taste in the past couple years.”
Despite the exorbitant amount of big artists releases in 2024, many artists not in the public eye created projects that captured Skyline’s attention.
“The best one that I’ve heard all year is by Loose Koozies and it’s called Passing Through You,” says math teacher Nicholas Bertsos. “It’s a rock and roll record, but it’s Southern Rock.…There’s a song on there called ‘Run To Me’ about the band’s dog that passed away this year. It’s upbeat and it’s fun and he’s saying like “Run To Me” man, like I can’t wait to see you again, run to me. It’s really cool to hear a song about mourning and grief that is upbeat and hopeful.”
“I would say my favorite was I Lay Down My Life for You by JPEGMAFIA was my favorite,” said Kirill Zamulin (‘27). “I really like the sound production. It feels really unique”
“[My favorite was] You Only Die 1nce by Freddie Gibbs,” said Malcolm Jemison-Blais (‘26). “I’m a really big fan of Freddie Gibbs, and it’s kind of a progression in his sound as a musician.”
