Skyline girls basketball has accomplished so much this year. Tonight, they face Pioneer at home, heading into this rivalry game with a record of 8-11.
The team started to gain momentum in their 2nd game, against Bedford. “We won the first quarter over Bedford 10-9,” said Coach Mike Lovelace. “At halftime, we were down 18-17 instead of 30-11 at Bedford. We were competitive the whole game against Bedford and it was a 37-35 Bedford lead with about two minutes left before they took care of the ball and won 40-35. We almost pulled out an incredible win for this stage of our development.”
Not only has the team improved a lot this year but the team has a lot of new faces. With five freshmen on the varsity team. They have proved that they can play up to the varsity level and contribute to the team. “The incoming freshmen with Jane and Sadie Jordan, Josie Lovelace, Lucy Llanes and Alex Strauss have done a great job improving each week and staying positive while playing a full varsity schedule that is a huge jump from middle school,” said Lovelace. “Jane and Sadie are averaging 10 points and 6 rebounds per game as freshmen at the varsity level.”
With the Varsity team being so young this year, we only have one senior. Abby Yuan (‘25) has shown great leadership for the team, helping the team get better and work harder for future games. “One thing I want to leave with the team is that effort is the only thing you can control in the game,” said Yuan. “The calls that the refs make and miss shouldn’t affect how much effort you put into the game.”
Districts are still coming up and the team has hopes of making it far especially with the momentum they have right now. “I fully expect us to be ready to play our best basketball of the season in the district … and then hopefully gain momentum from a first round win to see if we can get another one after that!” said Lovelace. “Winning the district would be an amazing end to our season and I firmly believe we have a chance if we are playing our best as a team.”
