This past fall, Hanna Kamal (‘28) joined the freshman and JV Skyline football team and became the school’s second female kicker.
“One of my favorite parts about being on the team was playing with my friends, and gaining the opportunity to play football like I have always dreamed of,” said Kamal (‘28).
Kamal worked very hard all season, training with the teams as well as doing additional workouts. “I am so thankful I was able to train with the team. [It] has made me a better athlete and player overall.”
Kamal plans to continue her football career for her next three years here at Skyline.
Johan Landis Lewis (‘25) used his experience & knowledge to help Kamal and Skyline football in the future. “I decided to help Hanna train because she was a part of the team,” said Lanis Louis. We don’t have a kicking coach, so I did my best to help her learn. Hanna’s work ethic made it easy for her to learn, and even though I hadn’t really had to do something like that before, I found it fun.”
No sport is easy. Every sport has its own challenges, physically and mentally. “The mental aspect of having to be confident with yourself is always hard,” said Kamal. “Of course, all of the other players are confident and cocky, so you have to put a lot into being confident.”
Kamal added lots of key components to her team. “She was a good and supportive teammate,” said Keegan Roberts (‘28). “She is definitely a very strong kicker and helped be a leader and supporter on our team.”
Football is most commonly known as a male-focused sport, so when Kamal showed up to tryouts it was expressed as a shock to some. “It wasn’t my first time being on a football team with a girl so I wasn’t as surprised but I didn’t think she would be a kicker,” said Titus Reed (‘28).
“Skyline football is a great community,” said Kamal. “I hope injuries don’t prevent me from continuing my football career for the next few years I have here at Skyline.”
