Ranked 10th in the state, this year’s Skyline Varsity Men’s Tennis has found massive success. The team’s hard at work allowed them to have a great season and advance to states. This team looks to continue this success by practicing hard and staying hungry for wins.
The team gets hype before every match and is always ready to play. “We prepare by stretching, eating, and drinking a lot of water,” said Mihir Anand (‘27). But what leads this team to victories and separates them from other sports teams is what they do for practices.
“We do up and down the river, dingles, and match play,” said Anand. Most other sports usually drill specific things into their players, but tennis plays a variety of tennis related games, and eventually gets to a regular match at the end.
Down the river is a game where the team plays a circuit, and depending on whether you win or lose, you move up a court, or down a court. Dingles is a game where you and 3 other players play with 2 balls, and you must score with both balls to score a point.
The tennis team has a complex schedule, compared to other sports. “We usually play our matches on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, but they can be on Monday and Wednesday,” said Anand. Many other sports often play their games on Fridays/Thursdays and weekends.
While playing tennis is a big commitment, being on the varsity team is a symbol of this commitment and of hard work. “It feels rewarding being on the varsity team,” says Justin Woo (‘27).
