It’s really hard to find a good horror movie these days, the kinds that have meaningful buildups and storylines instead of the boring old copy-and-pasted subjects with millions of dollars poured into a crappy hour and 30-minute flick. The best stories are the ones created by people who want to catch your eye with the beauty of their film rather than catch another dollar in their pocket.
These five amazing films are great ways to kick off the fall season or extend your Halloween, the best Holiday ever.
The Exorcist and the Scream saga are good films to start your scaredy cat friends on, lacking any deep edge-of-your-seat buildup and containing plot lines that are very predictable. However, if you are a real horror fan who wants raw, good-fight flicks to make your skin crawl, I’m your guy.
Let’s face it, The 2015 adaptation of Carrie (R), is the worst interpretation of the Stephen King novel this world has ever seen. It honestly made me yawn, with the horrible acting on top of the bad writing and a very juvenile plot. But if you’re looking for something that makes you forget about that monstrosity, you should really consider watching the original Carrie. Not only do you get a peek into the world of vintage, but the film has amazing acting and contains such gory, scary scenes it’ll make you never want to be a high school bully.
I’ve seen a good deal of zombie flicks, and my favorites are the ones with fast, aggressive zombies. But if you are tired of watching World War Z a million times, give 28 Days Later (R) a try. The action-packed 2001 sci-fi horror with awesome casting takes a normal zombie apocalypse and turns it into one of your deepest nightmares. This chilling film also originates concepts you’ll see recreated in most of your favorite zombie media. If you ever turn on The Walking Dead and compare the two side by side, you’ll quickly come to realize how much inspiration the popular show took from this 2000’s British film.
Being afraid of evil old people is one of those fears that are often laughed at, but in The Visit (PG-13), this almost irrational fear is no laughing matter. Not only is it one of the grossest horror movies I’ve seen, demonizing visiting grandparents and triggering germophobia in the most uncomfortable ways, it also creatively uses found footage as if it is shot through the main characters’ own cameras.
There are only two autopsy horror movies I know exist and Autopsy of Jane Doe ® is by far the best. It was the first horror movie I ever watched and it kept me up at night. After watching countless horror movies and not being very afraid of them anymore, this movie still scares me, and it will scare you too. It follows a story that is very original, using a plot which is very mind-twisting. It has a creative filming style that makes viewers feel like they are inside the film. It isn’t a concept you see a lot. This makes the movie refreshing.
Something that really spices up zombies is Korean zombies. Train to Busan (Not Rated) is one of the most edge-of-your-seat zombie movies I have ever seen and I highly recommend it. It was the first box office hit zombie movie in Korea and for good reason. Train to Busan captures an awesome story and some really scary zombies who can spread the virus in seconds and twitch like rabid animals. On top of that, the zombies that can run and climb make the film much more stressful than a film with just normal slow-walking, rotting corpses.
