Though we each have a different life experience, adjusting to a new school is something we can all relate to. Maya Zogaib (‘28) is a 9th grader adjusting from Forsythe Middle School to Skyline High School. Already, she has made many new friends, was on the 2024 Freshman Homecoming Court, and is currently on the Skyline Swim and Dive team.
With around 1,300 students, it’s a given that the first day at Skyline can be stressful, especially for freshmen. “I was a little bit nervous I was gonna get lost,” says Zogaib. “But I was really excited to meet new people because everywhere I looked there was someone I didn’t know. I like how kind everyone is and the community of the school.”
Zogaib is learning to balance schoolwork and sports. “I’d say my transition has been going really well,” she says. “But the amount of work I’ve been getting has been a bit difficult…Between Swim and my schoolwork, I just have to prioritize my time differently now.”
Although the workload in high school differs from middle school, Zogaib expresses happiness with her classes. “My teachers are all amazing; there’s not a single teacher that I don’t like.”
Not only has she excelled in her schoolwork, Zogaib was also chosen by her classmates as one of the representatives in the 2024 Skyline Homecoming Court. She attended the dance and this year’s Homecoming football game. “It was really fun!” she recalls. “It was really amazing that people voted for me, that they think of me as a good person.”
Beyond Homecoming Court, Zogaib is also passionate about Skyline athletics. She is one of 10 freshmen on the Skyline Swim and Dive Team. “I joined the Swim and Dive Team because I’ve always liked swimming, and I wanted to get better at it,” she explains. “The team is amazing, everyone is super nice, and even if it’s a morning practice at 6 am, we’re all together and we all pump each other up. It’s an amazing community and I love it.”
Zogaib’s goals include plans to continue swimming throughout high school. “I’ve enjoyed it so much this year,” she says. “In the future I’d hope to grow as a swimmer and get state cuts. I also want to connect with more people during this school year – and continue working hard to get good grades.”
