From various players recovering from injuries to winning the Southeastern Conference (SECs), this spring has been a season to remember for Skyline’s golf team. “It’s been kind of a shaky ride since some of our players got injured,” says varsity captain Vibhav Alokam (‘24), “We started good and then went downhill but we’re hitting our stride again.”
The challenges have been mental and physical, but one of the most troubling has been scheduling. “A lot of our athletes are high achievers and are involved in other activities,” says Head Coach Melissa Schmidt.
The golf team’s placements have improved this year, placing 2nd twice and 3rd once in only three matches. “Golf isn’t really a 1v1 game cause there’s around 10 teams at each tournament,” says Alokam, “so getting top three is always good.”
After winning SECs, Skyline moved onto regionals where they played 19 teams. The team played very well, taking first with a score of 302. “We won by 12 strokes as a team,” says Vibhav Alokam, “so we are going to states from June 7th-8th”
The team shares many of the same goals as other teams at Skyline, such as winning SEC’s, but they are also focused on more than just their performance. “Off the course we want well rounded athletes athletically and mentally,” says Schmidt. “We’re focusing on our mental game to stay in the right headspace to elevate their round, but we also want them to set great boundaries with how many activities they are involved in and have them enjoy being part of the golf program at their high school.”
